She was on business
The 💯 STORY CHALLENGE and the remnants of masculine pride.
“Are you coming for breakfast?”
“Sure, I’ll be with you in a minute.”
“I have to leave soon, and I hoped we’d eat together before I dress.”
“Yes, I appreciate you’re busy. Main breadwinners often are.”
“Let’s not cover that ground again. While we’re here, we can share the leisure time so I expected a stay in a luxury hotel would cheer us up. Anyway, a wife earning more than her husband isn’t unusual”
“I’m not sexist, just depressed about being fired.”
“Laid off, that’s different.”
“Whatever, it’s your employer who can afford to send you on a business trip to Miami while I’m forced to beg for days off without pay and have it agreed as though they’re glad to be rid of me for 72 hours.”
“I’m sorry you’re having a rough initiation into your job.” There was a pause, and she heard him sobbing outside their bedroom window before saying, “Are you okay?”
Although there was no reply, she became aware of noises from the pool area below. She leaped off the bed and found their balcony was empty. When the shouting continued, she didn’t require to peer over the edge to realize she was a widow.
